I tend to ignore the suggestions of doctors that I do a
breast self exam. After all, I'm in my twenties and I
can't get breast cancer, right? Turns out I was wrong
and
we're at risk no matter how old we are. For those
of us who need a little help, I found the correct way to
do this lovely, exciting exam (hmm). Make sure that
the other women in your life check their breasts.

1. Begin by looking at your breasts in a mirror with
your arms at your side. Make sure that your pair are
their natural color, size and shape and that there is
no distortion or swelling. If you notice any puckering,
dimpling or bulging of the skin, a nipple that has
changed position or become inverted, and redness,
soreness, swelling or a rash, visit your doctor.
Raise
your arms and look for the same changes.

2. While at the mirror, squeeze your nipples with your
finger and thumb and check for any nipple discharge
or blood.

3. Lie down and feel each breast with the opposite
hand. Use a firm, smooth touch with your first few
fingers, keeping fingers flat and together. Check all
the way from your collarbone to the top of your abs,
from your armpit to your cleavage. It's easiest if you
begin at your nipple and then move outward. Begin
softly and then press a little more firmly so you can
really feel the area.

4. The last step: feel your breasts when you are
standing or sitting, which is easiest if they are wet, so
try this in the shower. Repeat step 3.
