TESTED. The Editor of HCZ's Adventures in
Beautyland (or something like that).
The other day, I had my first manicure. It's true. Being a violinist
has not blessed me with beautiful hands. The tips of my fingers are
callused and my nails are chopped short, usually attacked with the
clippers just before a concert. In fact, my hands in general are
probably one of my body parts I pay the least attention to. Since I
originate from a mountainous countryside, my paws are used to hard work
and cold winters, where they were lucky to see gloves. As a result,
they were in need of some TLC. When a friend from Japan with perfectly
groomed hands came to visit me for Christmas, I felt inspired and
decided it was time to get a manicure. Although I sit writing this with
chipped pink fingernails and a jar of nail polish remover next to me, I
have to say that for a few days, my tips brought me utter joy. For the
first time in my life I feel inspired to care for my (now-healthier)
nails.
I've test-run some very simple at-home hand and nail pampering
ideas
since I know as busy and starving college students, we cannot
afford regular manicure appointments.

Before Bed:
1.) Soak your nails in a bowl of warm water and then gently push back
your cuticles with a washcloth.
2.) Rub some olive oil on the skin surrounding your nails, and gently
massage some creamy lotion all over your hands, focusing on rough
patches.
3.) If possible, wear cotton gloves to bed and you'll wake up to softer
hands.
4.) Brittle nails? Try painting on a calcium-rich topcoat.
